- Distance: 5 km
- Time: 2 hours
- We'll depart early for Sun Gate, where you'll have your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. A 2-hour guided tour will then take you back to Aguas Calientes and take the panoramic train to Cusco.
We begin the adventure with a relaxing day to acclimatize and prepare for the trek. We depart from Cusco on a two-hour journey to the important Inca archaeological site of Tarawasi , where we will explore its history and architecture. Then, we continue to Mollepata, the starting point of our trek. We choose a little-traveled trail that will allow us to appreciate a great diversity of native plants, flowers, and birds, while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the valley.
Our camp is located at Marcocasa (3,500 m / 11,482 ft), a remote and serene spot from which we admire the majestic view of the snow-capped Rayuska (5,350 m / 17,552 ft). Here, tranquility and contact with nature will be our companions for an unforgettable night.
We leave Marcocasa and continue toward Soraypampa along a short, gentle trail, ideal for acclimatizing while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Upon arrival, we are greeted by three of the region's highest and most majestic peaks: Humantay (5,917 m), Tucurway (5,910 m), and the impressive Salkantay (6,217 m). We walk for approximately another hour to our camp at Salkantaypampa , located at 4,100 meters above sea level. Due to the low nighttime temperatures, we recommend wearing a hat and gloves for a comfortable night's sleep.
Incachiriaska Pass (5,028 m), the highest point of the trek . From there, we contemplate spectacular landscapes of snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and lush valleys. We then descend to Pampacawana (4,000 m), where we will camp. Along the way, we may spot typical fauna such as vizcachas, white-tailed deer, condors, and vicuñas, while absorbing the majesty of Salkantay , a sacred mountain to the Incas.
We continue descending toward Wayllabamba to join the legendary Inca Trail. En route, we visit Paucarcancha , a highly significant Inca archaeological site. Here, we switch from mules to porters to protect this delicate ecosystem. We camp at Llulluchapampa (3,800 m), the closest camp to Dead Woman's Pass. On the ascent, we pass through several ecological zones that allow us to observe diverse Andean flora and fauna, including, if we're lucky, white-tailed deer.
One of the most challenging days of the Inca Trail awaits us, with the overcoming of two mountain passes. Thanks to our strategic location, the ascent will be more bearable. Along the way, we visit the Inca ruins of Runkurakay and Sayacmarca , examples of Inca sophistication. We also enjoy the cloud forest and its biodiversity. Finally, we set up camp at Chaquicocha (3,600 m), a peaceful place to watch the sunset among the mountains.
A less demanding day will allow us to explore three impressive archaeological sites: Phuyupatamarca , known as the “village at cloud level”, Intipata , possibly an experimental agricultural station, and Wiñay Wayna , our final camp at 2,600 m. There, after lunch, we can enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and explore the beautiful nearby archaeological sites, famous for their canals, terraces, and temples. The day culminates with a special dinner and a heartfelt farewell to our porters.
The day culminates with an early morning hike to the Sun Gate, from where breathtaking views of Machu Picchu are revealed at sunrise. We take a two-hour guided tour of the citadel, learning about its history and architecture. Then, we descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch and take the train back to Cusco, concluding this unforgettable adventure with memories and lessons that will last forever.
