Updated Inca Trail Availability Information

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most famous trekking routes in the world and one of the most requested in Peru. Every year, thousands of adventurers from all over the world reserve their spots months in advance. By 2025, the Peruvian government has maintained a limited quota policy to preserve this heritage, allowing only 500 people per day on the classic 4-day route. Of those 500 daily slots, only about 200 are available for tourists, as the rest are allocated to guides, cooks and porters.

Early Booking – Key to Securing Your Spot

Due to the high demand and limited number of permits, it is essential to book early, especially if you plan to travel between the months of May to September, which is considered high season. For many months in 2025, the permits can sell out up to 6 to 8 months in advance, so it is recommended that you book as early as possible. Please note that permits are non-refundable and non-transferable, and only agencies authorized by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture can manage them.

Important Dates and Annual Closing

A key part of planning your trip is to know that the Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February each year. This closure is part of the trail's conservation and maintenance measures, as well as coinciding with the rainy season. Outside of that month, the trail is open the other eleven months of the year, subject to permit availability. For 2025, permits are expected to be released starting in October or November 2024, as officially announced by the Ministry of Culture.
