Day 1: Cusco – Humantay Lake – Salkantaypampa
(16 km • 8-hour hike)Depart from Cusco for Soraypampa . Hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m) and camp next to Salkantay Mountain (3,900 m) . A first day filled with high-altitude landscapes and Andean energy.
Day 2: Salkantaypampa – Salkantay Pass – Collpapampa
(18 km • 9-hour hike)Wake up to a cup of hot coffee overlooking the mountains. Cross the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) , the highest point on the route. Descent into the cloud forest to reach the second camp at Collpapampa (2,770 m) .
Day 3: Collpapampa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
(16 km • 8-hour hike) Hike through the tropical forest. Visit local communities and learn about coffee farming. Participate in Pachamanca , an ancient culinary experience. Hike to Aguas Calientes , where you'll stay overnight.
Day 4: Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
(4-hour exploration) Board the first buses to see the sunrise at Machu Picchu . Explore this wonder of the world with your expert guide. In the afternoon, travel back by panoramic train and bus to Cusco.
Begin your adventure in the Peruvian Andes at 5:00 a.m. , when our team will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco. Aboard our private transport, we'll begin a scenic drive of approximately 4 hours to Soraypampa (3,600 m) , the starting point of the hike.
During the journey, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the snow-capped Salkantay and Verónica mountains , considered sacred mountains by the ancient Incas. Along the way, you'll also observe the transition from the high Andean valleys to the inter-Andean valleys , with colorful agricultural landscapes, traditional villages, and native vegetation.
Upon arriving in Soraypampa , we'll take a short break to use the restroom, meet our cooks, muleteers, and support staff, and prepare our gear. Then, we'll begin the 2-hour hike up to the famous Humantay Lake (4,200 m) , one of the region's most impressive natural gems.
At the summit, you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable view: the turquoise Humantay Lake , fed by the glaciers of the snow-capped mountain of the same name. Here, you can rest, take photos, and absorb the energy of this sacred place for about an hour.
After the descent to Soraypampa , we will enjoy a hot lunch prepared by our chef , with local and nutritious ingredients to replenish our strength.
In the afternoon, we resume our journey with a moderate 1.5-hour hike to our exclusive campsite at Salkantaypampa (3,900 m) , surrounded by glacial valleys, open views of the Andes, and a perfect setting for a starry night. After tea , we'll have dinner and rest in glamping tents , ready for a comfortable night under the clear skies.

We wake up to a hot cup of coffee or tea served in your tent , surrounded by stunning Andean landscapes. We have breakfast overlooking the snow-capped peak and begin the ascent to the highest point of the trek : Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) .
This section takes about three hours, and along the way, you'll admire glaciers, rock formations, and high Andean wildlife . Upon reaching the summit, you'll have time to rest, take photos, and admire the surroundings. On clear days, you can even see a glacial lake hidden among the mountains.
We then descend for two hours to Wayracmachay , where we have lunch surrounded by alpine landscapes. In the afternoon, the route completely transforms: we leave the cold mountain landscapes behind and enter the tropical cloud forest , where the air is warmer and more humid.
We'll hike for another 3 hours to reach the village of Chaullay , our base camp at 2,900 meters (9,514 feet). Here we'll enjoy the lush forest, full of colorful orchids and native plants, with a typically warm and pleasant climate.

The third day of the adventure begins early, at 5:30 a.m. , when you'll wake up to enjoy a refreshing coca tea and a nutritious breakfast . With renewed energy, we'll begin our hike along a fascinating trail that winds through the dense mountainous jungle of the Salkantay Valley , following the course of the Salkantay River .
During the tour, you'll pass through picturesque local villages where traditional Andean and Amazonian life intertwine. You'll also be able to taste fresh and exotic fruits native to the region, such as passion fruit, banana, freshly picked coffee, avocado, mango, orange, and papaya , providing a unique sensorial experience.
Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot the cock-of-the-rock , Peru's national bird, known for its vibrant colors and spectacular courtship display.
After about 7 hours of hiking and 16 kilometers, we'll arrive at the quiet village of Lucmabamba , nestled among coffee plantations. Our base camp is located for resting and recharging our batteries. This picturesque village offers basic amenities such as restrooms, electricity, and artisanal souvenir shops.
After a delicious traditional lunch, we'll take a local bus for approximately one hour to the Hydroelectric Station . From there, we'll continue walking along the train tracks for approximately three kilometers, a journey of approximately one hour, until we finally reach Aguas Calientes , the gateway to Machu Picchu.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be welcomed at your hotel, where you can relax, have dinner and rest, preparing for the unique experience that awaits you the next day at the wonder of the world: Machu Picchu .

This is the big day. Very early, we'll take the first buses to Machu Picchu (approximately 5:30 a.m.) to be among the first to enter the citadel and experience the Andean sunrise over the ruins.
Our guide will take you on a comprehensive tour (2–3 hours) of the most important areas: the Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Sacred Plaza, and more. You'll have time for photos, contemplation, and personal connection with this sacred place.
If you booked in advance, you can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for spectacular views (optional). After the tour, you'll take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you'll have free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, you'll take the Vistadome or 360° panoramic train to Ollantaytambo. From there, you'll be transported to Cusco and then transferred to your hotel by private transport.

The 4-day Salkantay Trek is the second most popular and challenging hike to Machu Picchu, where you'll experience a radical change in climate and landscape: from high altitudes and snow-capped mountains to lush tropical rainforest. Therefore, it's essential to be well prepared and bring only the essentials.
Personal backpack (recommended weight: 5 to 7 kg)
- Original passport (keep it in a waterproof cover or plastic bag to keep it dry).
- Rain poncho (also bring a waterproof jacket and cold-resistant gloves).
- Sunscreen to protect you from the intense sun at high altitudes.
- Toilet paper and small change for local restrooms (sometimes they charge admission).
- Insect repellent for the jungle and cloud forest areas, as well as long-sleeved clothing.
- Multiple jackets: one waterproof and one thermal/coat for cold mornings and evenings.
- Energy snacks : bars, chocolates, nuts or granola for long days.
- Reusable water bottle (minimum 2 liters), to keep you hydrated throughout the day.
- Headlamp or small flashlight (essential for moving around camp and bathrooms at night).

Canvas bag for transport (maximum 7 kg)
This bag will hold the equipment that you do not need to carry in your daily backpack, and that will be transported by mules during the trek .
- Sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero temperatures (minimum -10°C). You can bring your own or rent one from Machu Picchu Explorators .
- Sturdy hiking boots (preferable to sneakers to protect your ankles and prevent injuries).
- Lightweight sandals for relaxing at camp after your hike.
- Socks: 5 pairs of wool for trekking and 4 light pairs for rest.
- Underwear: minimum 5 changes, consider bringing more in case they get wet.
- Breathable hiking pants: 2 or 3 pairs (evening/early morning sweatpants).
- Long-sleeved T-shirts: 5 units for sun and cold protection.
- Wet wipes, tissues, and a small towel for personal hygiene.

Important recommendations
- Remember that you can only carry 7 kg in your duffel bag and a maximum of 8 kg in your backpack during the hike.
- Leave the rest of your luggage safely at your hotel in Cusco.
- Temperature variation can be extreme, so be prepared for cold weather in the mornings and warm weather during the day.
- Wear comfortable, breathable, and quick-drying clothing for added comfort.
