Key fact: The Inca Trail passes through three climate zones in just 43 km — high alpine, cloud forest, and subtropical jungle. Temperatures can swing 20°C in a single day. Layers are essential year-round.

Remember: Temperatures drop approximately 6.5°C per 1,000 m of altitude gain. The trail climbs from 2,700 m at the start to 4,215 m at the summit — that's a difference of nearly 10°C in the same afternoon.

Rainy Season Hikers: Even in the wet season, mornings often start clear. Rain typically falls in the afternoon (2–5 PM). Start early each day and always have your rain poncho within reach — not buried in your duffel.
