Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

The best alternative to the Inca Trail — wilder, more dramatic, and no permits required

Discover the Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek is widely considered the best alternative to the Inca Trail — and for many adventurers, it surpasses it. Named after the sacred Apu Salkantay (meaning "Savage Mountain" in Quechua), this route takes you beneath a towering 6,270m glaciated peak before descending through cloud forests, coffee plantations, and tropical valleys to reach Machu Picchu.

Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek requires no advance permits, making it a flexible option for travelers. The route passes through five distinct ecological zones, offering a biodiversity and landscape variety that is simply unmatched in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Salkantay Trek

No — the Salkantay Trek does not require advance permits like the Inca Trail. This makes it a flexible option that can be booked with shorter notice. However, the Machu Picchu entrance ticket (included in our tours) still needs to be reserved in advance as capacity is limited.

The Salkantay Trek is rated challenging to very challenging. The hardest section is the crossing of Salkantay Pass at 4,630m on Day 2, which involves a long, steep ascent in thin air. Good cardiovascular fitness and at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco (3,400m) are strongly recommended before starting the trek.

The best time is during the dry season from May to October, when skies are clearer and trails are drier. However, the Salkantay Trek can be done year-round — unlike the Inca Trail, it does not close in February. The wet season (November–April) offers lush green landscapes and fewer trekkers, though rain is likely.

Both options are available. Our standard tours use quality camping gear with tents, sleeping mats, and a cook. We also offer lodge-based versions of the trek for those who prefer more comfort. Contact us for details on lodge availability and pricing.

Our tours include: certified bilingual guide, horsemen and horses (for carrying camp equipment), cook and all meals on trail, camping gear, Machu Picchu entrance ticket, train from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo, and transfer back to Cusco. Not included: sleeping bag (available to rent), travel insurance, and personal expenses.
