Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu can be visited year-round, but the experience varies depending on the season. The dry season (May to October) is the most popular time, offering clear skies and stunning views of the citadel. The wet season (November to April) brings lush green surroundings, fewer tourists, and lower prices — though rain is likely, especially in January and February.

Our recommendation: if you want clear photos and ideal trekking conditions, visit between June and September. If you prefer a more intimate experience with smaller crowds, November or March are excellent choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit

Yes, absolutely. Machu Picchu has a strict daily visitor limit of 4,500 people and tickets often sell out weeks or months in advance, especially during the dry season (June–September). We strongly recommend booking at least 4–8 weeks ahead. All entrance tickets are included in our tours.

The train departs from Ollantaytambo (about 1.5 hours by car from Cusco) and takes approximately 1h 45min to reach Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). The journey passes through the Sacred Valley and cloud forest — it's a stunning ride in itself.

Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level — significantly lower than Cusco (3,400m). Most visitors feel comfortable at Machu Picchu even if they still feel the altitude in Cusco. We recommend spending 1–2 days in Cusco before your tour to acclimatize.

Yes! Our Machu Picchu Full Day tour departs early from Cusco and returns the same evening. However, if you want a more relaxed experience with time to explore Aguas Calientes and catch the sunrise at the citadel, our 2-day option is highly recommended.

We recommend: valid passport (required for entry), comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, light rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, 1–2 liters of water, snacks, and a small backpack. Large suitcases and tripods are not allowed inside the citadel.

Machu Picchu has some accessible routes and circuits for visitors with reduced mobility, though the uneven stone paths make full access challenging. Please contact us before booking so we can advise on the best circuit and make necessary arrangements.
